The underwater room at Manta Resort in Zanzibar pays tribute to relaxation and seclusion. Aiming to offer their guests an experience like no other, the owners of this luxurious retreat in Tanzania envisioned an unusual platform surrounded by water and including everything a couple might need for a peaceful off-land escapade.

Designed by Swedish company Genberg Underwater Hotels, the place comes with three levels, each with its own special features. The bedroom is located four meters below the surface, with transparent glass windows ensuring unobstructed views of the tropical marine life. Probably the closest you’ll ever get to sleeping inside an aquarium, the underwater bedroom offers a chance to observe this surrounding ecosystem during night time also, with spot lights especially installed under each window for the spectacle. Guests here admitted to having seen coral, octopus and Spanish dancers around their “water cabin” at night.
Sunbathing and stargazing on the top deck are the other two “highlights” of briefly inhabiting the Underwater Room in Zanzibar. The middle floor is where the “common” living spaces are located. [Photos @ Jesper Anhede]
