The opportunity of traveling to Hong Kong should be animated with a visit to Lantau Island, the largest island in the Chinese region.
Because of its indigenous forests, Lantau is often referred to as “the lungs of Hong Kong”. So if you are a nature lover, this could be the perfect getaway to relax, contemplate and take in the fresh air.
The beauty of the island is well guarded by the impressive 34-meter high Tian Tan Buddha statue (informally known as “The Big Buddha”). For a closer look, you can climb the 268 steps leading to the bronze landmark and enjoy the landscape as you ascend.
The other main attraction of Lantau island is Po Lin Monastery, a haven of peace and meditation, which was built (according to TravelChinaGuide)” by three monks and was initially called Da Maopeng. In 1924, however, it was renamed Po Lin Monastery. About 70 years later, it has become one of the most renowned and most popular tourist destinations in Hong Kong.”
In the vicinity of the Big Buddha lies The Wisdom Path, a natural place where you can find 38 wooden monuments set in a ∞ pattern, the symbol for infinity. These monuments contain verses of The Heart Sutra, one of the most important prayer of Buddhists.
Have you visited Lantau Island? We would love to find out about your experiences!
